what is the point of tying a roast with twine?
I bought a 2lb roast that is tied with twine, like a fishing net. I am going to cook it in the crock pot. What is the point of tying it with string if I’m going to be cutting it up later anyway? Should I remove the twine or just cook it like it is?

Generally the purpose behind tying a roast is make the shape of the roast consistent in thickness so that it cooks evenly when roasted. Since you are using a crock pot there is absolutely no reason to leave the roast tied. It will actually cook better and be more tender if you remove the twine. It won’t hurt it to leave it tied, but it will be easier to handle removing the twine while it is cool, than when the roast is really hot and dripping.

I can’t think of anything better than gathering up my fishing tackle on a splendid summer morning and travelling to a desired beach, lake, or stream. Fly Line Backing
Can I use 45 lb test backing for fly fishing for lighter fish?
I’ve got a 5 weight rod/reel and 5 floating WF line. I need backing. There’s some 45 lb test cheep. Can I use it?

According to the box: “45 lb. line fits in the space of 125 yds. of conventional 20 lb.” Will this work on my setup or should I throw in the extra money and go for a smaller backing?

Mono and flyline backing are of different diameter, and flyline backing is usually dacron. I would spend the extra couple of dollars and get the dacron backing. Here’s why:

When mono stays “fixed” on a spool for an extended period of time it will develop a memory (i.e. coils) and will not retain its breaking stregnth (even though 45 pound test is really strong).

Another reason to go with the dacron backing is that you are not going to get a smooth transition from your flyline to your backing with 45lb test mono. When that fish of a lifetime hits do you really want to chance a clunky knot trying to slither through your snake guides ? Add that to the fact fly rod guides aren’t really made for mono and you could risk damaging them.

To me, it’s just not worth trying to save a couple of dollars.
